Inside the Mind of Multi-talented FASU Gold Medalist from Mauritius

On September 27th, during the 2024 FASU Athletics Award Ceremony, one athlete captured the spotlight as he stepped forward to accept his second medal of the event - Joseph Dezardin Prosper from Mauritius. Proudly claiming gold in the men's high jump, Joseph's victory was just one highlight of his impressive performance during the games. The day before, he had also secured a silver medal in the men's long jump, showcasing his exceptional talent and versatility.

Joseph expressed his happiness and gratitude when asked how he felt about medaling in both events. "I am happy to have medalled in long jump because it was a personal best for me. In high jump as well, though not a personal best, I did my best, and I am very happy with the result," he said.

Regarding the number of athletic events he participates in, Joseph stated - "I mostly do high jump. Long jump, I just dabble in it sometimes." In an intriguing revelation, he also added that he was supposed to participate in the hurdles event at the FASU Games but was unable to do so as its timing clashed with the high jump event.

When asked how he juggles practice for multiple sports alongside his university studies, Joseph explained the delicate balance in a thoughtful response. "I try to have a timetable and allocate the same amount of practice time to my events. But sometimes, it is difficult, and I end up having more time for one and less time for another. But you need to find time to make it up." He also revealed that he is a fourth-year electrical engineering student at the University of Mauritius.

Concerning his future plans, Joseph admitted that he was still weighing his options between his passion for athletics, particularly the high jump, and his academic career. "Let me finish my degree first and then think about it," he said with a smile.

Like many participants in the 2024 FASU Games, Joseph Dezardin Prosper exemplifies extraordinary tenacity in balancing the demands of both sports and academics. The FASU Games bring together the finest university athletes from across the African continent, making Prosper's achievements on such a stage even more impressive.

Indeed, Joseph embodies the spirit of African excellence. Whether he chooses the high jump bar or electrical circuits, his determination and resilience are bound to help him soar to new heights.
